FARMINGTON, Conn., June 24, 2013 — KBE Building Corporation (KBE) and Einhorn Yaffee Prescott Architecture & Engineering have achieved LEED Silver certification for Connecticut College’s Fitness Center in New London, CT.
The $44 million project was completed in September 2009. The project consisted of 10,406 square feet of new construction and 4,492 square feet of renovations to the existing building and lobby. The building – which is considered 21% more energy efficient than the minimum design standards – was equipped with high-efficiency heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting controls. Other energy efficient components include:
- daylight sensors, which reduces energy consumption;
- low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, sealants, and adhesives;
- wood paneling that was manufactured without urea formaldehyde; and
- a high-efficiency ENERGY STAR rated roof.
In addition to the LEED Silver certification, KBE has received multiple awards for the Fitness Center, includingthe 2010 “Excellence in Construction Award” from the CT Association of Builders and Contractors and the Ruby Partnering Award from the International Partnering Institute.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 2000, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, provides verification that a building was designed and built using aspects of efficient environmental health conservation strategies. The certification is divided into four categories: LEED, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Each category recognizes a building’s performance in specific areas, including: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection, and indoor environmental quality.
Most recently, KBE achieved LEED Gold certification for Connecticut College’s new Science Center at New London Hall. KBE has completed 16 projects that are LEED Certified or pending LEED Certification, including four LEED Gold.
