Fairview Celebrates Groundbreaking of New Thames Edge Senior Living Community

NEW LONDON, Conn., Sept. 9, 2013 — Seniors now have more housing options in the Groton-New London area, thanks to a new facility being built by KBE Building Corporation (KBE) (www.kbebuilding.com). The groundbreaking ceremony for Thames Edge Senior Living Community at Fairview took place on Saturday, September 7, 2013.

The spectacular weather was a fitting start to the latest expansion of the Fairview, Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut campus. The event honored the long history and service provided by Fairview, Odd Fellows Home in southeastern Connecticut, recognized the extraordinary “five star” care provided at this highly-acclaimed senior living community, and welcomed new residents planning to occupy the new homes when they open in the second quarter of 2014. The groundbreaking was attended by State and local dignitaries, representatives from Odd Fellows’ Grand Lodge and Board of Directors, the project’s design and construction team, and staff and residents of the Fairview campus.

Phase One construction of the new $13 million residential project includes 23 new independent-living homes, a new 3,753 square-foot recreation building with a seasonal pool, a small village green, and a main entrance and roadway off of Military Highway. Designed by Amenta/Emma Architects P.C., of Hartford, CT, this additional housing component at Fairview is being developed to provide seniors with the ability to continue to live in the beautiful greater Groton-New London community in an independent capacity while, enjoying the benefits of community living and a guaranteed continuum of five star care throughout their lives.

Located on 70 acres of riverfront property along the Thames River, Fairview was founded in 1892 by the Connecticut Independent Order of Odd Fellows Grand Lodge. As a non-profit facility, Fairview provides seniors with independent and congregate housing, healthcare, hospice, and rehabilitation services.

KBE has constructed and renovated many senior living facilities over the last three decades, most recently the $50 million, 195,000 square-foot Renaissance expansion at The Whitney Center in Hamden, CT and ongoing renovations to the Tower One/Tower East assisted living community in New Haven, CT.

KBE is currently providing reconstruction services on two other senior living facility projects, the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Bridgeport, CT and Fieldhome Senior Living in Cortlandt Manor, NY. The $75 million Jewish Home for the Elderly project is replacing an existing 360-bed skilled nursing center, to make room for a new 365,000 square-foot skilled nursing and assisted living facility that includes an adult daycare, a fitness center, and a childcare center. Construction is expected to start in December of 2013. The $58 million Fieldhome Senior Living project will consist of 102 Independent Living Units and 96 Skilled Nursing beds with supporting common areas, a daycare facility, and garages. Construction is expected to start in late 2014.

KBE has also constructed multiple projects in southeastern Connecticut, including a decade-long Asset Reinvestment Program at Connecticut College and a new commissary at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, CT. This $14.5 million project consists of a 57,000 square foot commissary with a general sales area, electronic checkout registers, receiving area, loading dock, meat and produce preparation areas, cold and freeze storage, and other supporting areas. The commissary is being constructed in adherence to current energy conservation policies, standards, and regulations, and is slated for completion in January 2014.

“With the aging baby boomer population, KBE Building Corporation has been at the forefront of a recent boom in the construction and renovation of senior living facilities,” said Simon Etzel, Principal and Senior Vice President of Procurement for KBE. “These facilities are critical to the wellbeing of our elderly citizens, and KBE is very proud to help these communities expand and update their campuses.”
