KBE breaks ground on new senior living project, The Chelsea at Washington Township

Farmington, CT 25 October 2021: Groundbreaking ceremony kicked off the start of construction for The Chelsea at Washington Township, an assisted living and memory care community in Washington Township, Bergen County, New Jersey.

KBE Building Corporation of Farmington has been working with the owner, Capitol Seniors Housing (Washington, D.C.) and architect Meyer Design (Ardmore, PA) on the preconstruction planning of the project. When completed, the 76,700‐square‐foot, two‐story community will offer 85 residential units for adults requiring assisted living and memory care levels of assistance.

This is KBE’s first project with Capitol Seniors Housing. To date, KBE, a national construction services firm, has helped planned and manage the construction of 4.6 million square feet of senior living communities across the US, encompassing more than $1.3 billion in construction volume.

The Chelsea site is located on historic Pascack Road, just steps from the quaint township’s Schlegel Lake, Senior Park, and community center. A short commute to New York City, the community’s placement also puts The Chelsea at Washington Township’s future residents within minutes of a wide variety of retail shopping and restaurants in the Washington Town Center shopping center.

“One of the most important actions we’ve taken as a team is to really dive into this project at the earliest stages of planning and design,” says KBE principal Jim Culkin, who is overseeing the construction of The Chelsea project. “The collaboration with the design team at Meyer Design and the management team at Capitol Seniors Housing has been essential to bringing us to this exciting moment – when shovel hits dirt and all the drawings and decisions become reality.”

The Chelsea at Washington Township will feature a variety of one‐and two‐bedroom luxury residences with many amenities thoughtfully designed for northeastern New Jersey’s senior adults desiring a full continuum of high‐quality services and care. The community’s amenities will include a bistro, sports bar, theater, multi‐purpose room, club room, private dining room, and courtyards designed specifically for both assisted living and memory care residents.
The project is scheduled to open in early 2023.

“We’re excited to break ground on this top‐quality senior living community in Washington Township, a
community with great history where many want to remain close to their families for the remainder of
their lives,” said Joe McElwee, Principal, Capitol Seniors Housing. “We are very thankful to the
community and local leaders who have worked with us on this amazing project. We are most
appreciative of the immediate neighborhood who worked so hard with us to come up with a beautiful
site plan.”
