Question: What led you to a career in the construction industry?

I was fortunate to grow up with a very special mentor and role model – my father. He taught me everything I know today. It truly was incredibly special to have someone that loves and supports you because it creates an opportunity that removes all barriers. Those mentors help women with entry, development, and retention in careers.

Question: How has the context of being a woman in the industry changed since you started your career?

The industry has changed dramatically in the last 20 years as women have been under-represented in the stereotypical “male occupation”. Women in construction has grown over 80%.

How do you leverage your position to help recruit and retain more women in the industry?

We are raising awareness in the workplace with committee and role model recruiting. We are encouraging teams to advocate for women. We are teaching women to be genuine to their character values.

What improvements can the industry make to help women succeed in the AEC industry?

In order to improve the industry, construction must attract and inspire more women. This could be achieved if every trade was to create more opportunities for a woman’s growth in their company. We can all strive to improve company culture. Women should be encouraged to let their strengths create opportunities. My best advice is to always walk through unexpected doors when they are open.
