Ribbon-Cutting for Long-Awaited Montclair Library on Oct. 29

KBE Building Corp. celebrates with Dumfries community

DUMFRIES, Va., Oct. 30, 2015 – What was once undeveloped land at 5049 Waterway Drive in Dumfries, Va. is now the official address of the brand-new Montclair Community Library.

On Oct. 29, Montclair residents celebrated the opening of their long-awaited, $9.8 million library at a fanfare ribbon-cutting attended by Dr. Constance Gilman, Prince William Public Library System Director; the Honorable Maureen S. Caddigan, Potomac District Supervisor on the Prince William Board of County Supervisors; other local community leaders; and staff members from General Contractor KBE Building Corporation (KBE).
Montclair Community Library | Project Highlights

  • new construction of a 20,000 s/f steel-framed library
    • 2’ x 6’ timber ceiling with exposed ductwork, sprinkler system, and lighting, along with carefully placed clerestory glass allowing for maximum daylight
    • perimeter with elevated terrace with a combination of brick pavers and pea gravel protected by a stainless steel cable rail system
    • eligible for LEED Silver certification, thanks to a vegetated “green” roof and other sustainable features
  • new construction of a 36,000 s/f parking garage
    • 16”-thick cast-in-place perimeter walls
    • 12”-thick cast-in-place ceiling with concrete beams totaling 96” x 36”
    • uniformly distributed openings on the east and north sides with an additional opening at the garage entrance on the south side
    • access to library by stairs and elevator

As part of the project, KBE also built the foundation and underslab plumbing for a historic African-American farmer’s home that was relocated to the site and was completely restored by a contractor specializing in historic restorations. The restored homestead will be used as a living history exhibit and working gardens.

“We’ve built a lot of libraries, both for communities and educational institutions, but this project had many unique elements,” said Eric Brown, KBE principal owner and SVP. “Dumfries has been waiting patiently for this new library, and it was such a pleasure to see everyone come out and celebrate.”
