11/2/18 – Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) CT Chapter honored two KBE Building Corporation projects at the organization’s Excellence in Construction Awards event on October 25, 2018 at the Aqua Turf Club. Litchfield Judicial District Courthouse project and the Putnam Refectory Renovation project at University of Connecticut (UConn) were each given the top award in their respective categories.
Litchfield Judicial District Courthouse was a Design-Build project between KBE Building Corporation and the DLR Group for the State of Connecticut. The project team included:
- KBE Building Corporation, Design-Builder and Constructor
- DLR Group, Architect of Record
- AM Architects, Associate Architect
- BVH Integrated Services, MEP, Structural, and Civil Engineer
- CR3, LLP, Landscape Architect
- Geodesign, Geotechnical Engineer
- Cerami & Associates, Acoustical Design
Designed as a 75- to 100-year building, the 183,000 sf complex offers a perfect union of judicial functions previously dispersed throughout the county: juvenile court, criminal court, family court, and civil court. Areas for probation officers, district attorneys, and other court support functions are now located within the facility. Enhanced security features, technology, high-end millwork, imported tile floors, acoustical systems to achieve sound absorption, and a design aesthetic that evokes the monumentality of the space are all part of the finished building. Each courtroom type features a different design aesthetic befitting its function.
For the UCONN project, KBE was General Contractor for the 42,000 sf renovation and interior fit-out to the Putnam Refectory dining facility on UConn’s Storrs campus. The project team included:
- KBE Building Corporation, Design-Builder and Constructor
- Amenta/Emma Architects, Architect of Record
- BVH Integrated Services, MEP, Structural, and Civil Engineer
Renovated to support the increasing number of students on the campus, the Refectory was designed to provide students with a wider assortment of food options, as well as plenty of space to dine with friends and fellow students. The scope encompassed the full renovation of the existing servery and seating area on the upper floor, and conversion of the lower level into an additional level of seating and servery. KBE managed the project concurrently with the construction of the Peter J. Werth Residence Tower and Monteith Hall, with all three projects located on a highly constrained, active campus setting. The Putnam Refectory renovation shared utility infrastructure with the Residence Tower project, and both had critical deadlines with penalties for late completion.
“The cooperative efforts among the University, the Design Team, and KBE contributed greatly to the success of the project,” stated Laura Cruickshank, FAIA, Master Planner and Chief Architect at UConn, who attended the ABC awards dinner. “The entire team worked tirelessly to ensure that the project remained on schedule.”
The awards program recognizes outstanding building projects while increasing awareness in our local communities regarding the quantity and quality of work being produced by members of the ABC CT chapter.
KBE has been a member of CT ABC since 1983. The $300 million firm’s past awards have included the “Best of the Best” Safety Award for General Contractor, the 30 Year Award, the EIC Spirit Award, the Merit Cup Award, and awards of excellence for projects in various categories.
